Expedition Base Set, released in September 2002, is the eleventh Pokémon TCG expansion and the first set of the E-Card series. With 165 cards, it was the largest set printed at the time and introduced the revolutionary e-Reader card technology, allowing cards to be scanned for interactive gameplay on the Game Boy Advance. The set features stunning e-Reader holo cards with a distinctive dot-matrix holofoil pattern visible along the card borders. Key chase cards include Charizard (6/165), Blastoise (4/165), Venusaur (22/165), Dragonite (10/165), Tyranitar (39/165), and Gengar (44/165). Expedition is notable for being the first set to feature fully bordered artwork on all cards, a design change from the Wizards of the Coast era. The set also introduced the first reverse holographic cards with a unique holofoil pattern covering the entire card surface except the artwork. For collectors, Expedition represents a transitional period in the TCG, bridging the Wizards of the Coast era with the modern era of Pokémon card design. The e-Reader cards, with their distinctive dot-code strips, are highly collectible and increasingly scarce.
