Neo Genesis
Neo series
Neo Genesis, released in December 2000, is the seventh Pokémon TCG expansion and the first set of the Neo Series. This landmark set introduced Generation II Pokémon from the Johto region to the TCG, including the three starters — Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile — and their evolved forms: Meganium (11/111), Typhlosion (18/111), and Feraligatr (5/111). Lugia (9/111) is the most iconic card from Neo Genesis, featuring the legendary Psychic-type Pokémon in a magnificent holographic artwork. This card has become one of the most recognizable and valuable cards from the entire Wizards of the Coast era. Other notable holos include Ho-Oh, the three legendary beasts (Raikou, Entei, Suicune were released in later sets), and Pichu (30/111) — the first Baby Pokémon card. Neo Genesis introduced several innovative mechanics to the TCG, including Baby Pokémon with the "Baby evolution" rule, new Energy card types (Darkness and Metal), and the first Pokémon with Poké-Body abilities. These innovations fundamentally changed how the game was played. The set also introduced important Trainer cards like Gold Berry, Pokémon Reversal, and the legendary Focus Band, which remained competitive staples for years. The set's card design is particularly beautiful, featuring the new Neo Series holofoil pattern with a distinctive sparkle. For collectors, Neo Genesis is among the most beloved sets in the entire TCG. Its beautiful artwork, introduction of Generation II Pokémon, and the presence of Lugia make it a cornerstone of any serious collection. High-grade examples of the holographic cards command significant premiums.
